Apple TV

Today I wanted to talk about the Apple TV.  This is not new and this article is not breaking news.  But I thought I would share with you what I think could be done with this little black box.  Right now it has improved greatly since it was first launched.  The most recent update to the box made it thicker.  This was needed though.  Why you may ask?  Well the new Apple TV has onboard storage, many new components, and can handle games and apps.  This was the big new feature they added.  The ability to have a dedicated Apple TV store.  This is where I have my issues though.  While the store is nice and is consistently growing and evolving as time goes on, it is not enough.  The new device is priced much higher and doesn’t give you a whole lot more.  I cannot connect it to my cable.  I am unable to use t as a DVR.  I also cannot an HD antenna to it.  I can only stream content that comes via the internet. I do have to give it credit for having a solid WIFI experience.  The box keeps a good…

Echo Show

Today Amazon did exactly what we thought they would do.  They released another member to the ever growing Echo lineup.  This time in the form of an Echo with a screen.  It is called the Show.  It looks like a mini computer type thing.  It advertises itself as a unique way to stay in touch with family and friends who also have the device.  I am unsure how it does the calls.  It is most likely though WIFI and their own application set.  But now that we have talked about the new toy, let me give you my opinion of it.  I don’t like it very much.  Here is why.  The device looks like a mini TV.  Like one of those old ones that were tubed.  The Show is really very think.  It is supposed to sit on a table by your bed or something along the lines.  But with its look I am unsure if I would ever want to do that.  The Show uses Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant for everything.  This would be the only redeeming part about this device.  Alexa is actually really good and responds quickly to your reques…

Why did Plastc and many others fail? An exploration into the failed smart card game.

You may remember that a while ago we were surprised with the announcement that Plastc was shutting down all of a sudden.  This came as a shock to all who had pre-ordered the device and were straight out of luck.  Though I am upset about the loose, I am more interested in why Plastc and so many others have fallen to their fate.   Why have they not been able to succeed?  I looked into it even more and found out that at least five companies have either sold what was remaining of their assets or declared bankruptcy. All of these companies were trying to do the same basic thing.  They all tried to replace your wallet with one device that would be capable of re-writing its magnet strip in a split second to any of your credit or debit cards for you to use.  The idea of this tech is not new and can be done in many different scenarios.  So this does not answer my question.  What were they all not able to do?  While this question does not have a single, easy to digest answer, here is my take on…

Microsoft Surface Laptop...What is new?

A very short while ago Microsoft released a new member of the ever growing Surface lineup.  Before we get into this particular addition, let’s chat about Surface in general. The Surface line is Microsofts attempt to make their own devices that run pure Windows.  This means that there are no unwanted programs installed.  These Surface products have gotten significantly better as time has gone by.  More recently the Surface line has increased to include the Surface Pro, Surface Book, Surface Laptop, and Surface Studio.  With these four main categories, Microsoft has covered the whole spectrum of any users needs.  I had a Surface Book for a while and it was really well built.  This seems to be the trend with the most recent Surface products.  They are well built and run very well.  So, the newest addition to this family is the Surface Laptop.  This is aimed at being a MacBook Air killer.  It starts at $999 USD just like the Air.  Here is a rundown of the specs and then we will talk about…

Is the SmartPhone Dead?

Today I read an interesting article.  The article talked about how the makers of the various smart lenses and virtual reality headsets have been quoted to say something along the lines of the smartphone being dead.  This confused me greatly.  If the smartphone is dead then why are so many companies putting so much effort into creating the next great smartphone?  There are latterly hundreds of phone manufactories around the world.  There are your big name ones and then there are even more budget ones.  This does not seem like a dead market.  So, that got me thinking.  What are they talking about?  Are they lunatics trying to do something crazy?  Or are they observing something we do not see?  I think they are trying to get more people to start showing even more interest into their products.  The funny thing is that most of these virtual reality headsets rely on a smartphone or a computer to function properly.  I think we may not be getting the full story on this one.
That is all I have…

SnapChat Spectacles

Have you heard of these?  They were discussed a while back and were initially only available at special vending machines across the Bay area.  But, good news!  They are now available online for everyone to have.  This is in case you are not happy with normal sunglasses and are not a fan of the Google Glass idea.  These are a in-between point.  They are not as invasive as the Google Glass ended up being but are slightly cooler than regular sunglasses.  I would really hate to own a pair of regular sunglasses now that these have arrived.  That would just be too ordinary.  Enough about that though.  These spectacles come in a variety of color options.  You can get black, a pinkish red, and a lovely baby blue color.  I have to say the color options are slightly unusual.  The black option is normal but the other two are not very attractive.  They also stand out a lot.  These spectacles have a side mounted camera for recording ten second intervals for posting to SnapChat.  That is actually t…

What is the best tech?

Have you ever asked yourself this question?  I have many times.  This is also a very hard question to answer in any reasonable amount of words.  But since we have already determined that I enjoy doing the impossible, we shall get started.  To figure out the real answer to this question, we must define a few terms.  When I say best tech I will be narrowing this down based on my opinion.  You may disagree with me.  I am not concerned with that though.  The next term we must define is what category I have chosen for this impossible task.  I have chosen handheld electronics.  Now, that is enough of that.  Here are the contenders for this prestigious title.  First up is the iPhone 7.  Not the 7 Plus.  Just the normal 7.  This is in the running because it does almost everything for everyone all the time.  I mean it has everything you need.  You can even make phone calls if you are that sort of person.  Second up are a pair of Shure SE215 in ear monitors.  These are my favorite headphones of…
